Welcome

The TTI works with community members both young people and adults to progress a variety of history projects. There is a significant interest in most things historical in Carrick-on-Shannon. This website provides a central access point to different history and heritage groups in the area and events that are happening.
Attic experience - An emotional experienceOn Saturday, 4th May 2013 a group of twelve adults stayed in the Workhouse Attic to commemorate those who died, survived and lived in the Workhouse. The participants slept on straw, but were allowed to bring in blankets and pillows, luxuries not experienced by Workhouse 'inmates' during the 19th century. Significant numbers of people perished inside the walls of the Workhouse and the Fever Hospital. Others survived and a descendant of one survivor travelled from Adelaide, Australia to take part in the Attic experience. Dr. Neisha Wratten the great great grand daughter of Bridget Cannon, a girl was probably coerced to travel to Australia from the Carrick-on-Shannon Workhouse under the Earl Grey Scheme.

The event was covered by the Times, the Leitrim Observer and Shannonside radio. Each participant had their own reasons for taking part, but overall it was an emotional experience for those involved.

PEACE III Programme: The PRF Project - A new initiative for 2013
As part of the PRF project, a new book will be produced. In 2012 Carrick-on-Shannon Heritage Group was successful in securing PEACE III programme funding to conduct extensive research into the plantation of Leitrim.
The group became aware of rare documents pertaining to this pivotal time in Irish history, which contained specific reference to Carrick-on-Shannon and the surrounding area. These documents potentially provide the corner stone of the Carrick-on-Shannon 400 commemoration planned for this year.
Historian Dr. Gerard MacAtasney has been engaged to conduct the research which will result in a new publicaiton, a public exhibition and a lecture series throughout 2013. John Bredin, Chairperson states "this is a unique opportunity and is only made possible through the PEACE III Programme managed by the County Leitrim Peace Partnership". The accurate historical data provides a basis to understand the events that have shaped social meaning in County Leitrim.
